Urine contains a small amount of albumin, a high albumin level is an indication of kidney dysfunction. This can be a decisive diagnostic clue. An impending heart attack, diabetes and high blood pressure cause the albumin level to rise.

Even a low level of protein excretion in the urine (micro-albuminuria) can have a major impact on your health. This is especially true if you are diabetic or suffer from high blood pressure. It is usually the only indication of impaired kidney function. If kidney disease is detected and treated at an early stage, kidney function can be maintained for much longer. Micro-albuminuria could also indicate a possible heart attack. Therefore, if you are diabetic or have high blood pressure, you should have your urine tested for albumin and micro-albuminuria at least once a year, otherwise every two years. In any case, checking the presence of albumin in your urine is a very good tool for checking your own state of health and taking appropriate further measures if the level is above 10 mg/l.
