The HI virus (human immunodeficiency virus) is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids (blood, semen, vaginal secretions or breast milk). There are 2 types of HIV: HIV-1, HIV-2 and their subtypes. In Central Europe, for example, subtype B from group M of HIV-1 is the most common. Subtype B of HIV-2 is most common in West Africa. If left untreated, HIV infection usually progresses in stages. An acute HIV infection usually remains undetected. If HIV infection is detected early, patients benefit from early treatment.
